The City
Amsterdam is a city and port in the western Netherlands on the IJsselmeer, which connects to the North Sea. It is the Dutch capital as well as the country's main business and financial center. Amsterdam is recognized to the thousands of tourists that visit each year for its historical attractions, major art collections, and the distinct color and character of its old areas, which have been so well preserved.
The canal network divides the inner city into 90 "islands," and the municipality has over 1,300 bridges and viaducts. Amsterdam is the economic centre of the Netherlands, and there tradition persists alongside innovation. Despite the city's modern metro system, approximately one-fifth of the workforce still uses the time-honoured bicycle for transportation. The city is still well-known for its numerous Chinese and Indonesian restaurants, as well as the hundreds of houseboats that line its canals. Amsterdam has also been recognised for its permissive attitude since the mid-1960s, and it attracts many people seeking an alternative lifestyle. City area: 64 square miles (165 square kilometres); metropolitan area: 245 square miles (635 square kilometres). City population (as of 2008): 1,028,603; metropolitan population: 1,482,676.
Tourism in general is a significant and rising economic activity. Many visitors travel to the city for business or to attend conferences, particularly at the massive RAI Exhibition and Congress Centre. Because it is possible to see many of the sites on foot in a single day, day trips to Amsterdam are also extremely popular.
